Everyone says Miatas are sooooo cheap and such an affordable car. I officially call bullshit. Go on your local Craigslist right now, search “Miata” in “cars and trucks - by owner” and screencap that shit, because I don’t believe you.

Here’s mine - Madison, Wisconsin.

Kinja'd!!!

You might be like “Oh, that M Edition sounds like a good buy.” WRONG!

Kinja'd!!!

“W-well, what about the ‘96 in Milwaukee?” It’s got more work done on it than a Playboy model. PLUS, it’s almost $3000. Doesn’t fit with the “Oh you can get a Miata for $1000” you hear all over here.

Kinja'd!!!

So, hit me with your best shot, Oppo. Prove me right or prove me wrong, but show me your Miatas.

Yeah, most of the cars under $4,000 are hammered, have a million miles, automatics, or are failed stance projects. Good NAs cost money now.

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/cto/536960… - $1k

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/534669… - $1.1k

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/534521… - $0.7k

These are probably in rough condition and probably need work, but yes, you can get a Miata for $1k.

Maybe it depends on location - around here you’re lucky if you find even a dozen Miatas for sale at a time, and if you find one for $1000 it’s either a incredibly high mileage NA or in not so good condition (usually both). For the most part, you’re not going to find one for that price unless you look in the right place at the right time.

I bought mine for £1600 a few years back which then was around 2500 American. After it got ravaged by British winters and driven into four times on four separate occasions I sold it for £500 in mechanically sound condition.

Honestly this one is pretty bad off so if you want a good one, it’s going to be $2500 or more.

Holy crap, a local Oppo, greetings! I’ve been doing this same thing for the last year and a half with little success. Prices have been pretty consistent at the “$2500+ for a descent one” level pretty much anywhere in Wisconsin.

That said, I have seen several in rough-but-workable shape go for $1200-1800. Never when I have money of course.

I also saw an E39 M3 sell for $1200, Madison is a magical place.

My Craigslist search for Miatas looks about the same, but I’m pretty sure all the ones fairly priced just sell almost instantly. I bought a ‘96 with 102k miles for $2300 and a ‘92 with 89k for $1700. Both needed some minor work but have been pretty solid. I literally called on them within 10 minutes of the posting and had to drop everything to pick them up before anyone else.

I never meant to hop on the Miata train, but there’s nothing more fun than chasing down high-dollar cars on the local track in your crappy beater.

Ah, I’m a mid-state loner then. The nearest largish town is Portage for me.

We shall all have to gather for some car based shenanigans. Perhaps the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive?

The 911 is VW going “Let’s make a sporty Beetle!” and then spending 50 years and untold millions of Reichmarks trying to engineer the chassis to quit murdering the drivers instead of removing the motor from its butt.

They’ve gone up in price I think. Good clean ones 3 or 4 years ago went for what crappy ones go for now.

It’s not that surprising. NAs are getting old but people drive them a lot. The ones that used to be low mileage aren’t any more, but the prices really haven’t changed as mileage has gone up.

I would hope NB prices would start to come down to fill the void.

Most of them selling in the Louisiana area are around $4,000. The big differentiator down here is a lack of rust.

My friend bought a silver ‘93 miata that he dailies for $1000

He’s put about $800 in to upgrades so far, but it was OK when he bought it (pic of car)

Sure, the paint might be rough, and yeah its dented on the side, but it came with coilovers (I think konis?) and some exhaust work.

I think this is partially in response to my comment earlier, just to be clear, it was a joke. Yes, there are some 1k Miatas around, but mostly it was just making fun of the fact that everyone calls them $1k cars all day around here.
